Judge’s Comments:

“Thank you so very much for allowing me to be the juror for this MGAL exhibition being held at the Memphis Botanical Gardens. It was truly a pleasure to do so! I was extremely impressed by the high quality of all the works submitted. As an artst I know what it is like to take a leap of faith and enter an artwork you have labored over into an exhibiton such as this. And, I also know the disappointment of having a work eliminated. We just pick up where we left off and keep making more artwork. Of course, every juror brings his or her own creative insinct based on their own creative sensibilities and had another juror came in after me; their decisions would totally be different than mine. Ultimately then, I had to settle into a process of the challenging task of selecting works that will not only be exhibited, but then decide which works will be recognized with an award. It is never easy! In fact, the task is daunting. But, I began the process of visiting and revisiting each work again and again; I was then able to begin the narrowing process.

When I juror an exhibition I look for works that appear effortless and exhibit a strong sense of craftsmanship, exceptional use of color and an overall strong attention to the use of media and presentation. From “Best in Show” to each following awards, the imagery I selected was based on the merits of the work itself. For me, in the end, this exhibit shows a full range of expertise that makes for a great show, a delight to see!” – Lawayne House
