Summary

Anaïs Zhang is a French-Chinese painter who graduated with a Master’s degree in Oil Painting from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts (GAFA) in 1999. Her work was selected for a national exhibition in China upon graduation, marking her first institutional recognition.

Following her academic training, she developed a distinctive path—one shaped by a deep engagement with the art world before returning fully to artistic creation. She ran her own art gallery in Macau from 2001 to 2009, then co-founded a communication agency in China, where she served as Artistic Director until 2017.

During this period, while continuing her personal painting practice—particularly through her travels—she deepened her exploration of image-making, visual storytelling, and the intersections between art, culture, and society.

Since 2018, Anaïs Zhang has devoted herself entirely to her artistic practice, developing a body of work structured around two complementary directions, unified by the central role of color.

On one side, a conventional painterly practice (oil and acrylic) where she weaves a dialogue between past and future, East and West, memory and imagination.

On the other, a large-scale digital project, Heroji, which extends her chromatic language into the digital realm. Inspired by artists such as Hockney and Warhol, this body of work celebrates mythological figures as guardians of the environment, creating a bridge between ancestral wisdom and contemporary pop aesthetics.

Her work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in China, France, and the United States. She currently lives and works between Biarritz, France, and Memphis, Tennessee.
