Judge & Notes: Wyatt Waters, Professional Watercolorist
Making art is a solitary pursuit but very public in its exhibition. The best thing about competitions is not beating other artists, but becoming better artists ourselves. The real competition is between the last painting we finished and the next painting we do—hoping the latter is the victor.
This exhibit shows a range of subjects and treatments and it’s very difficult to compare them.My method of judging is to walk through the show, doing little thumbnail drawings of them in a notebook. After I walk through a few times, I ask which have ideas that hold my interest. Then I look at the level of execution. Finally, and probably most important, is how it feels and how it sticks in my head and pulls me to it.
The Memphis Germantown Art League should be proud of the quality of this exhibit as I am proud to judge it.Thank you for trusting me with this honor.
