Plein Air Sketching Class:
This class will explore working with values, how to simplify the landscape.

We will plan to work outside, weather permitting; if not, we will work from slides.

There is a garden on the back side of the church with a few benches if anyone prefers to sit down to work.  Please bring a wide brimmed hat if you have one or baseball cap.  Bring sun protection and water if you need it.

Supplies:
  • Pencils: soft pencils like 2B, or 4B are good.  An HB pencil is fine too.
  • Sketchbook: Medium size sketchbook, or any sketchbook.
  • A viewfinder is recommended for this class.  Simply cut a 2 x 2.75 inch rectangular opening from an index card or card stock. This creates a little window to look through for composition.  Or if you want a slightly larger view, then cut a 3 x 4 inch opening from a piece of cardboard or card stock. If you don’t have time to make one, I can demo how to make one just using your fingers.
  • An eraser and sharpener might be useful too.
Matthew Lee, Landscape Painter:

Matthew Lee is a landscape painter who enjoys working directly from life, whether he is creating a “plein air” landscape in the hills of Provence, or in Memphis, TN where he currently lives. His paintings are often about creating an immediate connection with nature, capturing the light, forms, and feeling of a place.

Lee was born in Paris, France to missionary parents originally from Mississippi. He spent his childhood mostly in France and Germany, then returned to Mississippi for university, and to reconnect with his Mississippi family. The rich culture and artistic heritage of France were deeply imprinted on his life. In addition to being a painter, he is a licensed architect. For more information visit: matthewleestudio.com
